Air it out here! Whether your team is fighting for a playoff push or playin for next year, let's steam up some chatter on what your team needs to do to improve.
My KC Royals have been in the center of so much talk. If I was Allard Baird he needs to do the following. He knows that he's not gonna be a shopper this year, since the team is playing so poorly:
1) Get as much as he possibly can for Carlos Beltran. He will be the crown jewel in any deal that goes down between now and July 31st. The hottest of deals involves the Padres, where the Pods would trade Sean Burroughs and Xavier Nady for Beltran and Joe Randa. Another option that has come is a three way w/the Marlins and Yankees, where KC trades Beltran to Florida for prospects, then Florida pulls a "Mike Piazza" and ships Beltran to the Yankees for Jose Contreras. Either deal would be appealing, but I'd rather see Beltran in ugly Padre yellow.
Sidenote to Point 1: Juan Gonzalez I sure hope was a 1 year deal. When i was younger I thought he was an animal. Now I think of him as a waste of air. He probably wasted his last chance at major league succes.
2) Mike Sweeney also has popped up in trade rumors. This guy, if Baird is smart, is the cornerstone of the ball club. DO NOT trade! The Sweeney/Harvey flip flop has worked w/great success to this point. I still don't believe in Harvey's hitting ability, crazy for me to say since he's battin .360 right now. He does chew up a boat load of cash ($11 mil), so that also needs to be considered.
3) What trades do occur need to stock up in some young, talented starters. The Padre deal could include a move for a Brian Lawrence, a Jake Peavy, Adam Eaton...along those lines. Most Royal fans (including myself) are fed up with Darrell May. His style of pitching really belongs in the National League. Brian Anderson fits that mold a little bit, but has shown promise. With the Royal young arms Zach Greinke, Jimmy Gobble, and Chris George continuing to develop....the Royals are really not too far off from being competitive again.
