I for one think saves are the stupidest statistic in sports, so the Dodgers are up by 4 runs with an inning and a third and Gagne gives up one run and gets a save for not giving up 5 runs to lose the game. You put your closer in there when your winning anyway so why do you get an incentive if you don't blow it. I just don't get it.

But how are going to know if you need some to throw the final 15 pitchers? ERA you say? Who pays attention to that anyways?

A better stat would be something that indicates whether you let any runs score especially when inheriting runners. Its not really fair that the set up guy comes into pitch in the seventh or eighth when the starter gets tired and gives up a couple of hits and then pitches out of the jam only so the closer can come in in the 9th with the bases empty to get three outs while giving up X amount of hits. Some stat needs to emphasize what a pitcher does with inherited runners more.

Danny Graves leads the league with saves at 27 because his team never wins by more than 3 runs. He's had 33 oppurtunties while I guy like Gagne only has 14 saves in 14 oppurtunities
